How Not to Choose Camping Equipment

I have been outdoor rock climbing for years. Finding the right rock climbing equipment became pretty easy after I became used to it. There are so many people who give reviews on the topic, and so many respectable sources in the area that I quickly learned what I needed to take with me. Ironically, outdoor camping equipment was harder to find.

Since camping gear is a little bit less specialized, I had expected it to be easier to make selections. Wouldn't you think there are many different kinds of outdoor camping equipment that fit the bill? In reality, because it is less specialized there are many more opinions. I had not ever needed my own camping equipment before, and was confused by all the options. I thought I made good choices. As it turned out, I should have learned a lot more about what gear to buy.

The first time I took camping equipment on a rock climbing trip, I found this out the hard way. I actually had intended to take no risks at all. I got the best camping equipment for rock climbing that I could find – or at least what I thought was the best. I got a very well-made tent that was certified for Arctic conditions. I bought a mummy style sleeping bag and a lot of other survival-type camping stuff.

Unfortunately, I made a lot of mistakes in my choices. Although the camping gear that I got was really good, it was completely inappropriate for the purpose. It was too heavy, too hot, and too bulky. Having the wrong equipment on a rock climbing trip can be very dangerous. Every spare pound that you are carrying counts, so taking too much stuff up with you is always a bad idea. I was really ticked off at the time and could only blame myself for being such a know-it-all. It was more than a little embarrassing too; My buddies showed no mercy and heckled me for hours, and I actually dumped the sleeping bag on the last morning (and I am a real tightwad!).

This is why you should always pick out camping equipment with the help of an expert in the area. If you are just taking an overnight in a place that is easy to reach, close to civilization, and the weather is mild, it doesn't matter. You won't have to worry about having the best stuff. But if you are going on a serious outdoor adventure, you should do some serious planning. When you're in the middle of the woods you can't go to back to the outfitter to get the right gear.

Now that I know better, here is a heads up for you. Either go to a specialty store and get their advice in person, or log on to a site that specializes in outdoor equipment. I have had very good experiences with both Moosejaw and Altrec. Their service is quick and reliable. Even the few times I had to return an item there was no problem and I gladly recommend these companies. Rock on.
